Matthew McVeigh

Co-Director

Matthew McVeigh is an interdisciplinary artist, designer, and co-director of Hyphenate Art Consultancy. With over two decades of experience working across public art, performance design, and visual storytelling, Matthew brings a deep understanding of site, symbolism, and social dialogue to his practice.

Based on Whadjuk Nyoongar country,Matthew’s work is known for interrogating dominant socio-political narratives, exploring themes of cultural erasure, institutional power, memory, and identity. His installations often draw on place-based research and collaborative processes that centre ethical engagement with community and Country.

Over the past decade, Matthew has collaborated with an estimated 30 Indigenous language groups across WesternAustralia. These partnerships have involved extensive consultation, cultural mapping, and co-creation—embedding local knowledge systems, linguistic diversity, and community priorities into the conceptual and material fabric of each project. This sustained cross-cultural engagement has shaped his commitment to processes grounded in respect, reciprocity, and long-term relationship-building.

Matthew has delivered major public art commissions across Australia and has exhibited nationally, with works held in both public and private collections. His projects often integrate sculptural form, industrial materials, and participatory design to create works that are not only visually striking but conceptually layered and socially responsive.

Beyond visual art, Matthew has a background in theatre and performance design, having worked with nationally and internationally.

As co-founder of Hyphenate, Matthew is committed to reshaping public art processes by placing artists and cultural integrity at the centre. He brings strategic thinking, curatorial insight, anda strong belief in redistributing value, ensuring more resources reach the artists and communities driving the work.

Together with Rohin Kickett, he leads Hyphenate as a platform for cross-cultural collaboration, equity in the arts, and truth-telling through creative practice.

Hyphenate acknowledge the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia, and in particular the Whadjuk Nyoongar people, the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we live and work. we pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging. We recognise their continuing connection to the vast skies above, the flowing waterways, and the lands beneath our feet, Country that has held story, knowledge and spirit for countless generations. May we walk gently upon this Country, listening and learning from its custodians, with gratitude and respect.
